Questions to Ask When Hiring a Real Estate Agent

Choosing the right real estate agent is a critical step in selecting your next home and ensuring the process runs smoothly. Real estate agents are there to guide you through the homebuying process, from touring homes to putting in an offer. They can walk you through the transaction process and ensure the contract includes clauses to help protect you as the buyer. To help out, we compiled some of the most crucial questions every buyer should ask their real estate agent before working together.

  1. How long have you been an agent? Agents that have been in the business a long time are more equipped to handle and anticipate problems before they arise. They tend to have good negotiation tips because they have tried and tested them before. Someone who is new to this line of work might not have all of these skills.

  2. Do you work full-time or part-time as an agent? Typically, full-time agents are more devoted to their work and helping buyers find the home that is right for them. Part-time agents usually don't have the level of experience that full-time agents do, meaning they may not be as helpful to you.

  3. How many homes do you help purchase each year, and how many do you help close? Generally, the more homes a real estate agent helps purchase and close, the better they are at their job. According to NAR, “Real estate agents close an average of 10 homes per year.” Anyone who is below this standard might not be up to the task of helping you purchase a new home.

  4. How long do you usually work with buyers? Most potential buyers would prefer a real estate agent who can work with them from finding their dream home to closing on it. You should be aware that it may be an issue if an agent works with clients for six months or longer. This could mean the agent is not actively prioritizing the homebuyer, or the homebuyer is being very picky.

  5. Have you helped buyers find homes in this area, and at this price range? Your real estate agent should be knowledgeable about the area you are buying in and have experience working with homes in your price range. If this is not the case, they may not be as helpful when answering questions or find a home exactly where you want. If you are not looking for a multi-million dollar home, make sure you find someone who specializes in the budget you have chosen.

  6. Can I see your real estate license? Last, but not least, this may be an obvious question, but make sure your real estate agent has a valid license. Unfortunately, there are some scammers out there posing as real estate agents.

Overall, you should make sure you like your real estate agent, make sure they have a valid license, and read reviews. Real estate agents are there to help buyers find their next home. They can be a great resource to use, especially if you are moving to an area you are unfamiliar with. Moving is no joke and can be a stressful process. The better your relationship is with your real estate agent could mean the difference between a stressful experience and an enjoyable one.
