If downtown life is not perfect for you, Houston has many suburbs and neighborhoods to choose from. The cost of living is a bit high, but still affordable compared to most cities. With so much going on, you’ll never miss a beat. In downtown Houston, you’ll find the Theater District, the Houston Grand Opera, and the Historic District. Restaurants, shops, parks, and countless other amenities line the streets. Houston has a little bit of everything to offer to residents and tourists.

Many suburbs and neighborhoods make up the greater Houston area, the most popular of which are the Heights, Woodlands, and Sugarland!
The Heights
Located northwest of downtown sits the historic neighborhood called Houston Heights. This neighborhood dates back to the late 1880s - today, people are drawn to its rich architecture and unique stores. This area is extremely walkable with spacious parks and Victorian-style houses. While being so close to downtown, there is still a quiet neighborhood feel, with lots of events and things to do.
The Woodlands
This relaxed suburb is located northwest of downtown, home to lush parks, trees, and trails. The woodsy feel in this community brings comfort and privacy to residents. With plenty of restaurants, shops, and events with live music, The Woodlands is also known for its world-class medical care, extensive nature preserves, and top-performing public and private schools.
Sugar Land
On the southwest side of downtown, you will find the city of Sugar Land. This city was founded based on its strength in sugarcane production. Families tend to move here for the great schools and well-known bike trails that span dozens of miles. Local traffic is less dense in the area when compared to other parts of Houston. The crime rate in Sugar Land is also much lower than in other areas in Houston.
Things To Do
Due to its size and population, there is always something going on in the city. Houstons nightlife is expansive with popular locations in Midtown. Residents are quick to make the happy hour menu for drinks and conversations. Other restaurants and bars are making their appearance along Washington Avenue, making this a popular nightlife destination. During the day, The Museum District is a popular destination for visitors to see the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Houston Zoo, and the Museum of Fine Arts. If you have extra time on your hands, you want to head to the Space Center Houston for an out-of-this-world interactive museum experience showcasing space missions and exhibits. This is a must-see destination!
Additionally, Houston has plenty of free attractions and destinations to choose from. Visiting the Miller Outdoor Theater is a great spot to watch performances in music, dance, film, and more. The theater is set in Hermann Park and is a great spot for a picnic with the family. For you film buffs, Market Square Park hosts free showings of movies and other public events. Tucked away by Memorial Park is the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. Visitors are free to roam the 155-acre sanctuary and stroll the sprawling trails. If you desire to see the city from the water, hop on a 90-minute boat tour and learn the history of the seaport while taking in the beautiful views.
Weather
We could argue that one of the best things about southern living is the weather. In Houston, the summers are hot and the winters cool, with chances of rain year-round. The hot season lasts from June to September, with August being the hottest month. The winter season is from November to February, with January being the coldest month. Clouds are expected all year with mild, seasonal variation. With this comes wet days throughout the year, but the wettest season lasts from May to September. A factor of living in Houston that residents are not so happy about is the humidity. Houston experiences extreme variation in seasonal humidity, but the wind and water temperatures can help ease the feeling of discomfort associated with humidity. Naturally, when living in the south, you could experience hurricanes. In Texas, hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30. Peak tropical storm activity is from August to mid-September.
